Immortality - Kroenen has found a way, through both science and black magic, to make himself immortal. He has dust running through his veins in lieu of blood, and is full of an intricate system of gears in his chest which he must periodically wind like a clock in order to work properly. 

Enhanced durability - Given that he is essentially a hollow shell, Kroenen does not require rest nor food, provided he keeps himself wound correctly to keep his mechanical heart ticking. 

Scientific mind - Kroenen has a far reaching understanding of varying types of mutants as well as humans. Thanks to his leave for experimentation at Buchenwald, he has gained a rather vast knowledge of how mutations work and how best to harness and even enhance heightened abilities. 
Weapons:

Dual blades - Kroenen is also adept at the use of bladed weapons. He keeps a pair on his person when out on an assassination mission, and will often kill his target before they even know he has come, let alone have wasted ammunition on him.

Fear - Arguable, but Kroenen rarely speaks. It has been noted that even at Buchenwald where death was in the air always, one would set aside an extra shudder for the silent man in the gas mask.


Personality: 
Kroenen is a quiet, diligent man if man is indeed the correct term. He is happiest when he is at his work, which of course results from the unhappiness of a preferably unwilling patient. Kroenen enjoys opera music, and will often play it loudly on his gramophone to drown out the screams of his patients who are typically not sedated. It was noted that when his laboratory was destroyed at Buchenwald, he returned the following day and sat amid the rubble at a small desk and chair, still letting his music fill the air. Typically, Kroenen will not speak and indeed has little preference for seemingly anything. He will not remove his gas mask, he will not drink, he will not eat, he will not sleep. There is little if any personality to Kroenen other than he gets what he wants in the end. No matter what.  

History: 
Karl Ruprecht Kroenen was born a musical prodigy with angelic features and blonde hair, young Kroenen toured the capitals of Europe singing opera until his voice deepened with the onset of puberty, thereby ending his career. From a very early age, he demonstrated symptoms of masochism, whipping himself with a fresh branch of oak each day, and finding pleasure in the pain. As a teenager, he loathed his awkwardness and developed an extreme form of body dysmorphic disorder and succumbed to feeling a sort of relief in a form of surgical addiction. In his obsession with physical perfection, he conducted brutal experiments on his own body, including surgically removing his own eyelids, lips, and his toe- and finger nails. He designed a tight-fitting gas mask to filter out germs, which he wore almost permanently due to his rising phobia of contamination as he healed. He also became quite adept with mechanical devices, believing that fusing mechanical constructs with living bodies would help create perfection. One of his early inventions was a clockwork nightingale that sang a Mozart aria perfectly. 
In 1930, he met the resurrected Rasputin for the first time. Obsessed with purity, Kroenen quickly became Rasputin’s most loyal disciple. He subsequently joined the Nazi Party, and rose quickly through the ranks, joining the SS in 1933 and achieving the rank of Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant-Colonel. He was awarded the Iron Cross for services to the Third Reich, including a tour of duty as commandant of Auschwitz concentration camp, where he served with distinction. It was during this time that Kroenen took note of many properties of accurate surgery, so that he might pervert them of course. He was a diligent one for study, and soon was awarded a certificate as Doktor proper and was deemed fit for performing actual procedures and even maintaining patients during them....well, "patients." 
It was then that Kroenen wished to see just what made certain members of various races distinct from one another, and how they in turn might be perfected. He resigned his post ad Auschwitz and instead took up the position of lead experimental scientist at Buchenwald, another concentration camp, where he performed grotesque and often fatal surgical procedures on the prisoners held there. One such prisoner was of particular interest to him: a blue woman with hair the color of dried blood. He could never seem to break her, nor indeed take her apart and put her back together. She ended up being responsible for several incidents at the camp, including causing the loss of Kroenen's left hand. 
Kroenen is noted historically as having established the Thule Society, a group of German aristocrats obsessed with the occult. It was during one of his many spare-time delves into such matters that he was able to divest himself of what passed for his soul, in exchange for everlasting life. But the price was that Kroenen had to maintain himself, soon performing several surgeries to replace his internal organs with gears and clockwork. Following several more incidents at Buchenwald, Kroenen's body was carried off a handful of times in pieces especially during one incident when his laboratory was destroyed in a fire. The following day, he showed up as he always had, ready to work and seemingly perfectly fine. Kroenen "repaired" himself with a prosthetic mechanical hand, a steel rod replacing the broken part of his spine and would often add upgrades to his clockwork heart, operated by a wind-up key implanted in his chest. By cranking the key, he was able to increase his speed and reflexes.
Kroenen's lack of lips did not help him to communicate, but he managed well enough with hand gestures and suggestion. He was a silent killer when sent by his Fuhrer on particularly deadly missions, which he preferred less than being left to his work. Even so, Kroenen did as he was told, silently and without complaint. It was on one such mission that Kroenen was absent from Buchenwald when it was bombed by the Allies in 1944. he returned to find nothing much left, and prisoners having gone. He then resolved to disappear, and encased himself in a suspended animation chamber deep in the secret bowels of the place, to be resurrected perhaps some day by whatever powers might deem him useful. 
After his disappearance, in 1944, an unmarked grave in Romania was found. Dental records identified the remains as those of Kroenen. His frozen body was later discovered by Madame HYDRA herself and retrieved, locked safely away in the chambers at the castle which served as HYDRA's current base in 1947. Now he waits, in a long sleep, to begin his work again.
