What's hidden behind the mask:
Personality: Doom is a calm, collected but nevertheless dangerous man when provoked. He is an ever-calculating schemer, and will do what is best for his interests and the interests of his country at any cost. He has on more than one occasion been noted to be unnervingly calm in a battle situation, but this stems not from lack of understanding but rather from his confidence in his own ability and his apparent knowledge of what is to come. Some of the higher ranking Latverian officials believe that Doom communes with the spirits of the dead and can even read minds, neither of which have been proven or disproven.
While Doom is a hard man, he is not devoid of sympathies. He cares more for the prosperity of his homeland than for his own life or even the lives of his soldiers, in the end. The greatest cause that they can live up to and the greatest sacrifice they can give is to the glory of Latveria, and each of his soldiers have been engineered by various training methods to live through this code to the end. Doom is nothing if not persuasive when it comes to bending others to his will, should the need arise.
History:
Born the impoverished son of Romani parents, the witch Cynthia and the medical expert Werner Von Doom, Victor grew up living a simple life. That is until the Baron of Hassenstadt, the capitol of the country of Latveria, burned his mother as a witch and Victor was forced to flee the country with his father along with many other refugees. Having learned subtle magics from his mother before she was murdered before him, the young Victor sought knowledge of any kind from wherever he could gain it. He would often stray from his encampment and find whatever healers or medicine men were in the region's high hills. As his skills in magic grew, fueled by his hatred of the Baron of Hassenstadt and the pain of the loss of his mother, Victor began to also study the philosophies of the world as he could come across them. Books were his treasure, and knowledge was the coal for the fire of his hate.
By the time Victor was a young man, he was the medical man and healer of his encampment as well as its greatest protector. His skills with magic had become just as useful for healing life as destroying it, when the need arose. As the group was moving through Latveria once again, they were stopped by scouts of the Baron. They ordered that any doctors or medicine folk were to come with them at once or the entire lot of them would be shot. Victor slowly stepped forward and volunteered his services, having foreseen in a vision what was to come. Taken back to the capitol Victor was presented to the Baron himself, now a bloated old wretch of a man. He ordered Victor to use his medicinal skill to save the life of his dying wife, his third one Victor noted. Victor agreed and spent a week tending to the woman with a combination of herbal concoctions he had long ago devised himself. When the week was up, Victor brought the Baron's young wife before the throne. As the Baron looked on and was pleased, suddenly his wife began to wither like a leaf in the chill of fall until she was nothing but a husk, collapsing onto the floor. The horror that the Baron had witnessed only ignited his anger, especially when he witnessed the amused look on Victor's face. The Baron ordered Victor taken to the dungeon and the torturer be given leave to torment him as he saw fit.
Within the confines of the castle's dungeons, Victor was lashed and maimed on a daily basis. But when he would not speak or break or cry out for mercy, the dungeon keeper was driven to devise a new form of pain. Fashioning a mask of iron out of the shackles left empty on the walls, left so long to chain the now long dead, the forge was kept hot and the mask blazing red. Victor was restrained and the mask was forced onto his face and clamped tight around his head. At this, Victor did cry out, seeing only the flames that had destroyed his mother. But his rage and pain caused him to create green flames from his hands, destroying all guards and prisoners alike within the chambers. After prying the mask from his now horribly disfigured and charred face, Victor stormed up into the castle keep and took the Baron to the highest parapet of the place. He levitated the pleading old man over the ramparts and as a crowd looked on from below, burst him into flames and dropped him to the street.
It was then that Victor donned the mask which had scarred him and forged a suit of protective armor so that none should ever touch his flesh again. It was then that Victor Von Doom became simply Doom, the Lord of Latveria. The country had been, during the Baron's reign, supplying the German military with many pieces of equipment during the earlier part of the forging of the Third Reich. Upon Victor Von Doom's takeover, all supplies were cut off. The Germans would receive nothing more from the country. Given the troubles suffered by the Axis Powers during the Second World War, Latveria's contributions had been minimal comparatively and so no effort was made against them. During this time, Doom rebuilt Latveria into a militarized nation, and was regarded as a terrifying but just leader to his people. His first act was renaming Hassenstadt, the previous capitol, Doomstadt in honor of his mother and family name.
The Latverian Empire is currently expanding, thanks to the militarized efforts of Doom himself. The takeover has spread through Slovakia and Austria, creeping up on the crumbled Germany after the fall of the Third Reich. Having eventually assisted the Allied war effort in defeating the Axis Powers, Doom's claiming of Eastern European land and expanding the Latverian Empire is not acknowledged or a blind eye is turned to it. After all, given his assistance in infiltrating the ranks of the Nazis and destroying strategic outposts because of it, Doom has shown his loyalty. But has he shown his entire hand just yet?
