1909 - Somewhere in Egypt
As the sun beat down upon the sands of the Eastern Desert, two figures strode along, side by side, on camels. One, the man, sipped water from his canteen before offering it to his companion, the woman. The woman smiled sweetly at him and accepted the canteen, sipping delicately from it before stowing it in her pack for later.
The two people were in fact Brigadier Sir Reginald Montgomery Rothchild XVI and his current love, Mystique. Well, known to him as Alia DeLarque.
And Mystique did look at him with nothing but love on her face. The two of them had bumped into each other, quite literally, some years back, and he offered to accompany her to wherever it was that she was going, without a care where it was. And of course, how could she turn down such a handsome face? He was dashing, charming, and he had saved her from a rather embarrassing tumble to the pavement, so how could she turn him down?
The truth of it was, she was on her way to meet with an old friend, but she had decided that this stranger was far more interesting. And so she had decided to change her plans to include the handsome man.
And it was a decision she had never once regretted.
She reached into the body of her knapsack and pulled out a leathery map, carefully unfolding it and holding it up. After examining it for a moment, she glanced up at their surroundings and back at the map.
"Well, the good news is, we're on the right track," she said. "We're almost to the Crescent Valley. From there, we should find some tunnels that take us into the mountains. If the legends are true, the lost city of Thinis will be past the tunnels and on the other side of the mountains in the oasis, along with the resting place of the first pharaoh of Egypt. Not to mention treasure that would cross the British Museum's eyes."
She beamed at Rothchild, a glint of adventure in her eye.
There was something remarkable about him. Something she couldn't quite put her finger on. Wherever she went with him, adventure always found them. It was uncanny in all of the best ways, and she loved it.
In many ways, she wondered what kind of adventures would find them in the lost city.
"You know, Alexander the Great once marched with his armies to search for this lost city," she commented, still beaming at him. "So did Caesar. And Napoleon. But you've got one thing they haven't got." She grinned a cheeky grin and made herself comfortable in the saddle.
