Laura had pulled up on her motorcycle to see several of her Fathers men running out the door like terrified children. one of them had been going close enough that she could grab them by the wrist until they gave a panicked and slightly disjointed explanation that made little to no sense. but Laura was able to pick up just enough to know what to expect.
trepidation was a powerful force in her mind as she quietly made her way up to the front of the bar, her claws sliding from her hands in preparation for the fight she expected to be greeted with. Laura didn't want to admit it but she hoped she was wrong, she hoped it wasn't... the door was open a crack and the scent of someone she had thought she'd known so well met her. Jessica.
'you'll stay right here.' her. their? her. her Fathers voice. Laura halted and waited, listening to the rest of the conversation until it was Laura herself that became the topic of discussion. no better time then now to make herself known. though her claws never retracted she did not come in aggressive, simply pushing the door open and walking inside, staring at them both.
"I appreciate you agreeing I am in the right." Laura said coldly, staring at what she could see of Jessica Jones from the way the two were huddled up and hugging each other. She'd aged. for some reason Laura hadn't considered that, and had expected to see the same teenager she'd been the last time Laura had seen her. but it was so obviously her.
Laura had said she hated Jessica. More out of spite then confidence that she understood her own feelings. Jessica had been her big sister. the child Laura used to be had loved her, and every second the two had spent together. Jessica had been her hero, someone she looked up to, and wanted to be like. hell, a large amount of the way Laura dressed came in part from copying the older woman's style. And you couldn't just turn feelings like that off.
but Laura had found Artie in such utter agony. seen him have to get used to limping around on a cane. unable to run, years of pain that never fully went away. it would be hurting him at this exact moment. And the anger wasn't going away either. and right now it was winning.
"get away from him Jessica." Laura said coldly. "I do not trust you near him any more."

Artie was about to reassure Jessica, looking into her eyes and shaking his head at the question. "Of course she won't ha-" but he was cut off when his second adopted daughter entered. Oh he knew that look she wore. He knew it well. She wasn't in much of a mood to hear excuses. Artie carefully slid from Jessica's grip, silently grateful that it wasn't her more iron hold she was so easily capable of. This threw a wrench into his plans......plans? No, reunion. No....plan...reunion.....both...? He looked wide eyed up at Laura and pulled himself to his feet as she approached, putting a hand out in a gesture of calm.
"Laura...no...." he said in a nervous warning tone, "It's all right. We've cleared up the issue, stay calm. Jessie came home because....that Kilgrave bastard is back. She needs to be kept safe. All right?" He wasn't sure she'd buy it. She'd possibly think he was under some panic or duress from Jessica's presence. In truth of course he wasn't. If anything, he'd enticed Jones into his thrall. But no that was heartless...wasn't it? Kilgrave was dead. Artie had made sure. This was his trap. To keep Jessica Jones for himself? To have his daughter home? Again, he thought, both. For the moment. "I won't have another brawl in here..." Artie said, still caution in his tone, "Not between you two. The police could come around any minute regardless, so....just stay calm, you two." He looked back and forth between the girls, not trusting that to work, but...well at least he'd said it.
His mind turned to what could come next. If Tipton sent his men over that kept off Artie's payroll, that wouldn't do. He'd have to snuff em. He had no weapons on him. Laura would, surely. Jessie might? He wasn't entirely sure. All that he knew was that it was that uncooperative sergeant's time for rounds and seeing this wreckage might cause a stir. He limped quickly passed Laura and closed the doors, latching them and turning to face the girls again with his back against the wood. "And the police means Tipton's men..." he half whispered, "If we're going to do anything rash what say we at least call a stalemate and move down to the Hole...." Both of his girls could be hotheads, Jessica most of all. She wasn't in much of a state to cause trouble for Laura, it didn't seem, but he offered the notion meekly anyway. Why not try to keep the place from crashing down around them?

Jessica was about to breathe a sigh of relief. Artie was reassuring her that everything was fine. That Laura wouldn't hate her. Then the door opened. She saw Laura's claws, and immediately her heart sank. Artie was wrong. That was hatred in her eyes. She knew the look well. It was a look she had seen in herself. She saw it in the mirror when she had nightmares about Kilgrave. She saw it when she dreamt Artie would kill her if she ever came home. She saw it when she couldn't bear what she had become. She knew that look very well, but she never thought she'd see it on Laura's face.
Shakily, she stood, bracing herself against the wall. She wanted to speak. To defend herself. But she couldn't bear to look into Laura's eyes. She just kept her eyes on the ground, twitching as a familiar voice whispered in her ear. She hates you, Jessica. No. Not you. Get out of my head. She wants to kill you, Jessica. Shut UP. She felt her hand ball into a fist, but she stopped herself just short of reflexively punching a hole in the wall. She had to get out of here. She had to. It was a mistake to come here to begin with. She forced herself to walk toward the door, but stopped and looked back at Artie. She didn't want to leave. She wanted to come home. She wanted to be safe. But she knew Laura wouldn't want to hear it. Her claws were out, and they probably thirsted for Jessica's life. After what she'd done, she didn't blame her little sister.
Tears stung her eyes, but her face remained as stoney as ever, obviously trying to shake them off. But the tears betrayed her, rolling down her cheek as she looked at who she once considered a family. It's best you leave. Do it. Walk out of here. But her legs wouldn't move. She didn't know if she wanted to run away again, or if she wanted to fall to her knees and beg for forgiveness. I said ... LEAVE, JESSICA. As if she was on rollers, she started to move toward the door again. This was a mistake. "I .... I'm sorry," she choked out before disappearing through the door.

Laura didn't understand what she was feeling. she didn't understand what her Father must be thinking. She didn't understand any of this. She took a step back just from the instinctual confusion of hitting the brick wall of her Father trying to make her stop protecting him. that had thrown her on a loop as her instincts interfered with what she was being told to do.
'Killgrave'. that alone made Laura's eyes dart to Jessica with something close to concern. That told Laura exactly what kind of mental state Jessica would be in right now. panic would be an understatement. "i am calm." Laura lied, but she had to accept Jessica being controlled again was unacceptable. No one deserved that.
It was easy enough to let Father talk things out. He was a talker when Laura preferred to just wait things out before deciding what to do. and all the while Laura just watched Jessica, and try to ignore how clearly she was hurting. she wanted to comfort her older sister. wanted to stop her crying. but Father limped to the doors, not walked, and Laura couldn't let it go.
And then Jessica left. again.
"No." Laura growled and turned to run after her into the outside. "Jessica!" Laura called after her, determined not to let this happen. "you are NOT leaving like this again! I will not let you!" Laura pressed on the speed until she was able to reach out and grab Jessica's wrist. there was a good chance that was going to get her hurt but Laura would take whatever would make her stop. "you owe me answers!"

"NO!" Artie shouted as he limped toward the side door. He couldn't let her go. Not again. Not now. His mind was a buzz of different emotions and thoughts and plans and schemes, but none of them seemed as important as 'keep Jessica off the street.' In a moment it didn't matter anyway, Laura had gone to her sister. Some relief swept over Artie's face, but it was brief. "Mr. Cade..." came a thick Irish voice he couldn't mistake, "I hear round there's been some trouble."
Sergeant Tipton had come, flanked by a pair of his policemen. Artie turned to face him, a scowl on his face as he stood somewhat blocking Jones and Laura from view around the corner. "No, no trouble," Artie replied casually, "Family emergency. Had to clear the club. It's my property, I'm more than allowed." "Of course, of course," Tipton said as he moved into the club without permission, "But its best we check these th....ohhhh well look now." Tipton nudged one of the Ticktockmen's mangled forms with his foot. "Tinkering again are we?" Artie limped hurriedly inside, wishing his girls weren't outside at the moment but wouldn't acknowledge their presence. "Here and there," Artie said as he put his hand to Tipton's sizeable chest, "And that's as far as you'll go without a warrant, Sergeant." The three officers looked around from the step they'd gained inside, surveying the not inconsiderable damage.
"Mr. Cade, I'm sure this violates several safety codes," he said with a sneer, "And I hear tell your little Jessica Jones is back in down. Looks to be her handiwork, wouldn't you say boys?" His two policemen nodded as they looked around. They'd been on the force long enough to know, but still Artie said nothing about her. "If Jessica were back," he growled, "I'm sure I'd be aware. I don't have to explain myself to you, only to a little piece of paper I don't see." Tipton nodded slowly. "True enough..." he said before he shoved Artie backward into the club, sending the much smaller man headlong into the bar, knocking over glassware. "Perhaps I'll return when I have one prepared." With a grunt of mild pain, Artie took the blow. He had to. If he lashed out like he wanted to, there'd be even more trouble for him. Tipton knew that. And yet he wouldn't leave. He kept looking around....for something? Artie stood and regained himself as Tipton stood backward out on the side door's step, technically no longer inside as he kept looking about.

Jessica had made it most of the way out of the alley before Laura caught up with her. She felt a hand stop her, and she reflexively whirled around, fist raised, but stopped herself when she recognized the person attached to the hand. She froze where she was, hand shaking uncharacteristically. She didn't often shake like this, but when she did, it was a clear indication that something was wrong. If she had been here to cause harm, she probably wouldn't be so shaky. She slowly lowered her hand, perhaps an attempt to hide it, but didn't immediately move away from Laura. "I know you want answers," she said, voice cracking from stress. "I just don't know if the answers I have are going to be good enough."
She opened her mouth to talk before she heard a commotion come from the direction of the bar. Artie had been left alone, and there was a commotion. And it didn't sound like one of his tantrums. Her hearing wasn't as good as her little sister's, but she knew the sound of someone being knocked around when she heard it. "You left him ALONE?" she chastised, starting to make her way back to the bar. "The POLICE were coming!"
And then Tipton reared his ugly head. Jessica instinctively dodged out of the line of sight and snuck up as close as she could from the shadows. At one point, he looked the other direction down the alley, and she took her chance to sneak up on him, standing in plain sight so he could see her inches from his face when he turned around. "Finding what you're looking for?" she asked, sneering at him. "Because I don't see a warrant in your hand. You might want to get out of here until you have one."
Her stomach was in knots, switching back to what she used to be before she ran away. She wasn't sure if it felt right anymore. But if she wanted to earn Artie's trust back, or even Laura's, she was going to have to show that she was on their side. And to do that, she needed to threaten the police dog that was always hounding them.

Laura never flinched when Jessica span at her, nor when she raised a fist at her, simply staring at the woman to see what she did next. The nice part was that she'd been wrong, Jessica never hurt her or even tried to. The niceness was instantly lost at how Jess shook, Laura wasn't used to seeing her do that and it scared her.
"The truth is good." Laura said quickly, not wanting to let Jessica talk herself out of giving the truth. "start th-" she too cut herself off at the sounds coming from home. Damn it. Laura span, looking similar to an angry cat the way she held herself with a glare in her expression and her heckles raised. DAMN IT. she looked away for five seconds and the police got the drop on her and Father was in danger.
Jessica voiced how Laura felt towards herself, and Laura scowled at the back of Jess's head as she followed after her. "Father is not a helpless child." she insisted, knowing it wasn't a good answer when she had known fully well threats were incoming wanting Fathers head. when on the defensive in an argument, a person often comes up with ways to blame someone else. so it was on pure instinct that Laura continued talking. "I prioritised you!" Her words took her by surprise, but Laura couldn't deny them and just kept going anyway.
All the way there, Laura existed as Jessica's shadow. when the older woman dodged or hid, Laura copied the action without hesitation, knowing she wouldn't do it without good reason. but when she held back was when Jessica approached Tipton. This was a more honest chance to see things then any words could be. What Jessica was willing to do to help Father would tell Laura a lot. Instead, Laura just retreated into her senses to make sure they were not being sneaked up on. police didn't come here alone if they were her Fathers 'friends' that were here to get a bonus for loyalty. There was no way Tipton didn't have friends somewhere they couldn't be seen.
Laura didn't stop to wonder when she had started watching Jessica Jones back again.

Sergeant Tipton wasn't well regarded in the department. He was seen as abrasive, antisocial, too focused on his work. He never drank. He didn't smoke. He was loyal to his wife. A stiff suit if ever there was one. In the years since Artie Cade had come to power after his late boss took a rather nasty hit, Tipton and a handful of the men in his division were some of the only ones who wouldn't be bribed of coerced in any way to ignore Cade's activities. It had led to his roster of loyal men growing smaller in number over the years. There was no mistake, with Fisk being outside his range of coverage, Cade was the Moriarty to Tipton's Sherlock Holmes.
"I don't need a damned warrant..." Tipton growled at Artie, "Not when a disturbance of this kind is reported-" His grumbling was interrupted when he felt a presence behind him, and upon turning to look his eyes widened in recognition as he and his men stepped back into the alley away from the door. "...well well..." Artie hissed as he leaned on the door frame, looking out at the frightened men, "Must've slipped my mind." "Y-yes I see..." Tipton said, trying to regain himself, "Out for a...stroll, were they, I suppose?" His wrinkled brow furrowed as he looked between Cade's daughters. They were always his pair of aces. Freaks from all he could surmise. He'd seen the Jones girl shove a squad car down the street like a marble shot, and the younger one Laura cut a man twice her size right down to the pavement. They made him nervous. Cade may have been a slippery one but at the end of the day, without his entourage, he was a half formed barking little junkyard dog with a bum leg.
"I believe it's time you were off," Artie said as he lit a cigarette and stepped out into the alleyway so that he was flanked by his daughters, "Unless you'd like Jessie to give ya a few years' overdue smacks upside your ugly mug. See how well it stays attached." Artie blew the smoke out of his nose and a wide grin spread. He knew she'd love to. Tipton's policy of turning guns on non-humans was well known. The good sergeant flared his nostrils defiantly and stood his ground. "You....people..." he spat, clearly hating using the word regarding them, "Your psychotic little 'family'...your day's comin. I'd watch your old man if I were you, girls. Every debt comes due eventually. And I'll be both creditor and collector. Maybe even...sooner than you think." Tipton's eye shifted to just behind the trio before him. "GENTS." he barked. Artie had to act quickly. His adrenaline from the day had built up again and was roiling with Tipton's comments, he saw what happened next in a series of slow movements.
Two men. Behind them. They'd come around the back. Pistols. Aimed. Artie had to act quickly. No no no no... Laura could take a bullet or three, he'd learned that the hard way. And Tipton would only want to see them injured, he wanted to haul the lot of them before a jury. Artie dove with all his strength and rather inconsiderable body weight to push Jessica back into the bar and out of the line of fire, diving after her. Damn it. He took a shot to his calf. On his bad leg. Not too much damage there. He grabbed for his cane where he'd left it and shouted to Laura. "LAURA!" he called, "ROUND EM UP INTO THE ALLEY IF YA CAN!" He retrieved the pistol from within the crook of his cane leaned his hand out the door, firing into the alley, taking out one of Tipton's corners as he turned back to Jessica. "Jessie!" he called, "I....if you don't want to help that's fine...! Unless...." Artie's eyes looked down at the large pieces of scraps and still intact steel arms that used to be his Ticktockmen. He looked back at Jessica and permitted himself a grin. She'd know what to do.

As much as Jessica hated that she was reverting back to what she was when she was a criminal, she did feel a tremendous sense of satisfaction when she saw the fear on Tipton's face. In Gotham, she liked to have at least a friendly relationship with the police. It was necessary if she was going to be a private eye. But here? All of the cops were already in the pocket of the gangs, and those that weren't? Well, they were lead by a metahuman and mutant hating jackass. In New York, there was no winning. So she stood, and listened to him prattle on about how their days were numbered. It was ... weird, being regarded as a part of Cade's family again. She didn't think she deserved it. But, this was as good a chance as any to prove she could be trusted.
She wished she could say she was surprised when he called for his boys. She knew what was coming. She knew his hatred of people like her a little too well. What did surprise her was feeling Artie push her back into the bar. She was caught off guard, so she was moved rather easily. She picked herself up and looked to see what the damage was, and saw Artie's leg bleeding. The leg she ... She ran over, pressing down on the wound to try to stop the bleeding. "What? Why wouldn't I help you out with that scumbag?" she said, looking at him. But he wasn't looking back at her. She followed his gaze to the scraps of the Ticktockmen, and to the arms. She looked at Artie again and saw the grin on his face.
She took her scarf and wrapped it tightly around the injured leg to keep pressure on the bleeding before walking over and picking up one of the scraps of metal gripping it like a shield. Then she grabbed an arm and swung it through the door to knock Tipton back several feet. She held the scrap up, deflecting a couple of bullets before swinging the arm wildly, trying to catch whoever she could with it. She didn't want to kill them, which she was sure was a tremendous difference from the last time Artie saw her. She didn't like killing anymore. No, instead, she was going to shock and awe, rounding them up for Laura.

Meta-humans had unquestionably changed the face of war forever. if your side had people with powers and your opponents did not you were at a similar kind of advantage as being the only side with artillery. or air support. if you were the only one with Meta-humans, and they were in full control of their gifts that idea only magnified even further.
Or to put it simply, Laura expected Tipton to retreat the second he realised Jessica and herself were behind him. There was a satisfaction in putting him so firmly on the back foot merely by standing there and looking at him, which turned to a bubbling anger at the way he spoke about her, Jessica, and what he would probably refer to as 'their kind'. She didn't pop her claws simply because he already knew they were there. if he was going to dig himself into this hole he was already well aware of what waited for him at the bottom without none-verbal threats from her.
so focused, Laura had become, on dwelling on the stupidity of insulting them like this when they held all the cards, that she was only turning at the smell of more men when they were too close for her to stop them from interfering.
Laura growled and was already moving towards these new threats when she looked over her shoulder to see her Father dragging Jessica out of range of the guns. it was the reverse of how she'd expected them to find cover but they were safe and that was all that-
one of the bullets took her left ear from her head and her train of thought vanished in a spray of blood and a gasp of pain. She gave her full focus over to the two men in time for another shot to catch her calf, driving her to one knee. Laura held herself up by her good leg and one hand propped against the pavement, glaring with defiant challenge at the cops. This was 'freakshow' territory and the kind of thing that made people loose their cool. most of the next volley of shots went wide, aim breaking down under confusion and a creeping fear. a shot made her jerk back as she took a shot to the shoulder but they weren't able to make her break her gaze.
The taller cop pulled the trigger once again and his eyes widened when all that came out was the click, click, click, of an empty gun. Beside him his friend was already fumbling for the ammunition in his pocket, muttering under his breath. Perfect.
Bone claws slid from Laura's hands. "my turn." Even with a still healing leg, Laura sprung like a pouncing wolf, planning to strike both of them down in one go, but her shoulder had apparently been hit worse then she'd thought, and one of her arms didn't quite come up as well as she'd hoped. Nor had she gotten the distance she had hopped for. Changing plans mid-air, Laura landed just short of the two new arrivals and started heading towards the space to the left of them.
Not wishing to die, they instinctively started moving to the right, finding it the place the dangerous girl was not preferable, and giving zero thought to the fact they were heading in the direction her Father had wanted them to go. Laura let them for just long enough before running to catch up and stabbing the closest one in the back just as he reloaded his pistol. she wrestled the gun from his dying, suddenly numb fingers and fired supressing shots across the way. One of Tiptons fools had poked his head out just long enough to start trying to line up a shot on Jessica, and the bullets zipping his way made him rethink his ideas of doing anything but hiding. as it should be.
Her ear didn't matter, her leg was healing. her arm could be compensated for. everything was fine, and she simply used what was left in the gun to delay as much as she could to let her healing factor bring things closer to that idea actually being true.

Tipton was in complete terror at this display....losing some of his boys, the only ones who had stayed loyal to him...who could he turn to now? Cade had half the judges in the city in his pocket, now even more of the police outnumbered him. This was all going badly...he'd expected this to be a turkey shoot at most. He watched in awe as Cade took out the last remaining of his boys. "All right! STOP!" Tipton ordered, pressing his back to the alley wall, "Enough! Cade! I give up, you win!" He tried to slow his breathing as Artie's unmistakable cackle was the only instance of reply at first from within the Wicked Suit. "Awwwww, but Tippy!" came Cade's voice, "My girls were just starting to have fun! And I haven't had my turn yet."
Artie limped out of the doorway, pistol ready and aimed at Tipton. The sergeant dropped his pistol and raised his hands, but Artie advanced still closer. "I could have gotten over this business with coming into my place uninvited..." he hissed, "Hell, I've gotten over essentially every other time you interfered with my business...but you waltz in here and throw venom like that at my girls?" He let out a few tongue clicking tsks as he pressed the barrel of his pistol to Tipton's chin. "That makes me angry. And youuuu of all people should know how I get. Right?" Tipton froze. This was it. But then Artie merely...laughed. letting his pistol fall to his side. "Ohhhhh you shoulda' seen the look on your face, Sergeant!" he cackled, "Oh Jesus Christ, that was priceless! Ahhhh good times....wow, as if I'd ever let you outta our little game so easy, huh? C'mooooon lighten up." Tipton visibly relaxed, until he tasted blood in his mouth when Artie jumped and pistol whipped him across the jaw. "I SAID LIGHTEN UP!" Artie practically roared as he kicked Tipton in the ribs, "GIMME A CHUCKLE, YA BASTARD, COME ON! I'LL PULL OUT YOUR FUCKIN' EYES MYSELF AND FEED EM TO YA IF YOU EVER SAY THAT KINDA SHIT AROUND HERE AGAIN!" The blows hurt. Steel toed shoes, Tipton figured. Artie didn't have enough muscle on him to cause that kind of pain on his own. "All right...!" Tipton coughed as the beating ceased, "But....you'll have a hell of a time explainin' all this to the-" "OH, WHAT, THE AUTHORITIES?" Artie laughed as he crouched down by Tipton's face, "I own the authorities on this. These dead fucks here? They may as well be bricks in the pavement. Now you run along, Tippy, and get back to your desk. Maybe you're a little too old for this, hmm?"
Tipton had had enough. He crawled forward a foot or so and pulled himself to his feet, nursing his injured jaw and really beginning to feel the pain in those ribs. He scowled at Artie, at his "children"....and stumbled down the alley back toward the precinct. Artie, slowly winding down from the adrenaline rush, felt the pain of the gunshot in his leg once more and staggered back against the alley wall, looking back at his daughters. "Welp..." he said, exhausted, "...guess that about does that, huh...?"

It felt ... different ... to be back. To watch Laura cut down the police like they were nothing. But it wasn't simply that, it was that she now had a fresh perspective on everything. She had now worked with the police. She had a new respect for the police. And now she was back and working with people that didn't have that kind of respect. It was gut wrenching. Jessica tossed her scrap to the ground and watched as Artie beat Tipton. He rarely soiled his own hands, but when he did, he always talked. Always. It was something she never really got used to about him, and being back in town reminded her that she never would. She preferred to let her fists do the talking, but he liked to reinforce that he was the one in charge. As if the person in the dust didn't already realize that if they were being beaten to a pulp by an emaciated dwarf with half a face ... and a bum leg.
She sighed and leaned against the wall, watching as Tipton ran off with some amount of satisfaction. As much respect as she had gotten for the police in the last few years, she still had no respect for a man that didn't respect non-humans. Her eye caught Laura's again, and that voice came back. Don't look at her. She won't want to listen to what you have to say. Shut up. She won't believe you. Shut UP. "Yeah. I guess that's that." She wanted to go inside and drink so maybe she could silence that voice, but she knew better. She wanted to wait for someone else to go inside. She wanted to wait for the sign of trust that they wanted her there. Especially from Laura. If Laura wanted her there, she would know that maybe this wasn't a total lost cause.
She stood awkwardly, eyeing the bar from where she was in the alley. She needed a drink. Desperately so. "So, where exactly does this leave all of us?" she asked, more to Laura than to Artie. She had a feeling she knew what Artie would say. Artie wanted her there. He offered her a place back in the family. But Laura? Laura would be harder to win back over. After what Jessica had done, she didn't really expect anything else.

Laura left her Father to have his fun and wondered over to the form of one of the men she had shot. he was sprawled on his side facing the wall. a pool of blood forming under him, even through the wind. "if you continue to play dead you will bleed out here." she said calmly, not showing any surprise when he jolted and gave a pained groan. "go. run after your boss and never appear in front of me again." was that mercy or just a desire to lessen the amount of corpses they had to deal with? she wasn't even the one that would be tasked with disposing of them, so that rang hollow as an excuse.
maybe she did not need a reason to watch him limping away down the same road Tipton headed down. Perhaps she had just grown a sense of whimsy at last. regardless, as he turned the corner and vanished from the scene he vanished from her train of thought and she never bothered to think about him again. There were other things going on after all.
Laura returned to Father and Jessica in time to hear them speak and chose to just walk past both of them. "come on. we talk." she requested in a curt enough tone to let them know she wasn't going to let them do anything different. as she went she poked her injured ear to feel how the regrowth was going and winced at the tenderness of the new flesh and slickness of old blood.
She went behind the bar and made sure to wash her hands off before she set about making her Father a drink, pouring him a glass of the best way to help him relax after stressful events. the glass in question being a little fuller then it was meant to be but he was still bleeding and she could guess he needed it.
After some hesitation, she grabbed the bottle she remembered Jessica favoured the most those years back and poured her one too, followed shortly by a pint glass filled with Russian vodka for herself. She didn't say anything until the two of them had reached the bar, simply studying Jessica with unreadable eyes. there was so many things she wanted to say. or ask. or demand. and yet it was eventually her/their Father she spoke to first.
"why are you not as angry as I am?" Because for the life of her Laura could not comprehend how Artie Cade was playing peacemaker between someone that crippled Artie and someone taking umbrage with that fact. hell he wasn't even peace making, he was flat out on Jessica's side! if anything was going to get her on the same page as him... and Jessica.... it would be an understanding of what he was thinking.

With all his adrenaline quite spent, Artie nodded in agreement when Laura proposed they talk....well, more precisely, ordered that they talk. Really, it wasn't often that she gave him demands. That meant that this was, to put it mildly, quite a serious matter. But why shouldn't it be? The last time Laura had seen her sister, she came upon the sight of Artie writhing in pain, his left leg all but shattered and bent backward against the knee. He had done his best to replace his knee with prosthesis of his own design, but mostly it was a joint ligament that he wore like a brace under his clothes. It didn't entirely work, as evidenced by his prodigious limp, but it held unless his knee fell out of place.
Artie slowly limped inside, hopping up onto one of the barstools and ignoring eye contact. It was moments like these that that tiny voice in the far depths of his brain reminded him that these two young ladies could destroy him. At any time. He generally made an effort to keep tones light but this clearly wasn't the moment. Taking the drink gratefully, Artie made sure that the fabric around his bullet wound was tight as it could be to stop blood flow and looked at Laura seriously.
"Why...?" he asked, tilting his head, "Because I forgave her for what she did a long time ago now." Artie took another sip of his Scotch. "And you should have too," he nodded, "I know we never really talked about it, but....well here she is. And with Kilgrave out there, even though I'm still a little leery of her being back here, I'm....willing to take that chance. Why aren't you?" The question he posed himself was said in a genuinely curious tone. Laura was far better in tune with her emotions than she would let on, he knew that. What was it that lent such a deep hatred of Jessie after all these years?

Father talked and it didn't help. Laura was still confused and still didn't know what to do or say or how to explain anything she was feeling and it was just bottling up inside her the more she tried to force it. "We never talked about it?" Laura repeated softly, looking between them both. "you are completely right! I came downstairs, Jessica was gone and I was left, the only one to try and stop you from going into shock or dying or both!" it was still so vivid in her mind. hearing her Father yelling in agony and knowing her sister had done this. not understanding why because she was gone and Artie never wanted to talk about it, which she allowed at first because he was recovering, but then time passed and it was harder and harder every day to try and find a window to breach the topic again.
Laura knew she was being selfish. she had no right to be the one acting the most upset over that night. he'd been crippled and lost his Daughter. Jessica had more or less lost her whole world. they had more of a right to it then she did. but it had still been one of the worse nights of her life, her Father crippled, not knowing for certain if he would live, and her Sister running out on them.
"because I do not understand why it happened! you never told me! you never wanted to talk about her all these years and changed the subject whenever I brought her up!" Laura snapped, starting to loose her patience. "You expected me to just accept Jessica was gone and had hurt you!" she took a breath and turned on Jessica. "and YOU! you want to just walk back in after all these years now you need something from us?"
Laura stepped from around the bar and moved until there was barely a few inches between the two women, looking up at her with hurt and years of built up grief. "i have missed you every single day since you were gone. Did you ever spare me a single thought?"
Laura was just running her mouth now, letting herself talk without thinking about it. One of Laura's greatest fears was being abandoned and as she talked it slowly crept in on her that that now Father had told her to let the issue of his leg go, now this fear in her mind was quickly growing like a cancer to fuel the fire and give her a reason to be so angry with Jessica. It was hard to hate someone for crippling your Father when he refused to bare a grudge over it anymore but the emotions were still there and in her emotional state she needed an excuse to keep it going. "you vanished without a single word to me! didn't I mean more to you then that? did you not ever think to just phone or write a letter or SOMETHING to tell me why you did what you did or where you were? i thought i might have deserved more."
There was a moment where Laura wanted to hug Jessica, or punch her, or storm out. What she did was shove her, doubting she had anywhere near the strength to even budge her. "and now you want me to pretend nothing has happened and just be happy i have my sister back?" Laura tried to shove her again but all the strength had gone out of her. "why do i owe you that when you never cared about me enough to say goodbye?" she asked softly, looking at Jessica with the hope maybe she could make Laura understand.
