1941 - Wissenschaft HYDRA Base, Dresden, Germany
The science lab was bustling in the HYDRA base. They had just gotten word that the Nazi army was sending someone to inspect their facilities, and most of the lower ranking scientists were scrambling to make sure everything was perfect by Nazi standards. Truly an impossible standard to keep, when their commanding officer saw to it that they were to keep busy around the clock. There were to be tests at all hours of the day, and there were plenty that thought it was an inhumane condition to keep them in. Not that their commander much cared.
Viper had other things to worry about. She was one of the highest ranking officials in HYDRA, the lieutenant general, and she was put in charge of scientific affairs. The Red Skull entrusted her with these things, and she was going to see to it that they were done to the best of her standards. And she was far less worried than her underlings.
The doors to the lab opened and everyone stopped where they were, lined up the center aisle, and saluted their commander as she walked in. She glanced at them and walked down the aisle to her station at the other end of the room to get to her own work. She had been tasked to try to replicate the super soldier serum that was lost. If there was any impossible task, that was it, but she was set on recreating it. Not for Nazis or for Der Fuhrer, but for HYDRA.
It wasn't long before she heard a commotion from outside the doors to signify that the Nazi troops were here to inspect the base. The labs would likely be their last stop, and so Viper barked an order for the scientists to continue their work until inspection time. They seemed frazzled, but they were more fearful of Viper's wrath than they were of the inspection. After all, it could have been anyone that came to check on their progress. It probably wouldn't be nearly as terrifying as they thought it would be, right? It was entirely likely that it was just some soldier that knew nothing about science, that wouldn't care about what they did and just told them to keep up the good work.
Viper knew better. Viper knew who was coming, and wanted to have everything just right for his arrival. Nothing was ready yet. No, no she knew she was still months away from a real breakthrough. But she wanted to have have everything ready for the first real progress report she had to give.

It was not often that Karl Ruprecht Kroenen was sent out on inspection of facilities such as this, let alone one under HYDRA's jurisdiction. He did not understand the need for such an organization writhing its serpentine form beneath the Fuhrer's flag, but all the same they had proven useful in the past. Their head of operations, their Red Skull as he was referred to, was a madman of the highest order. How Kroenen would have been curious to discover the exact conditions which left the man's head looking like that. Perhaps he would be permitted to do so after his demise. These were the thoughts that the Lieutenant-Colonel turned over in his mind as he sat in the long, black car that drove along with the two trucks of his SS men to inspect the facility. The officer seated beside him, by the name of Klaus Werner von Krupt, had been sent along to inspect the fortifications of the facility while Kroenen was sent for the laboratories and research wings. Von Krupt was a dull man, older and always hiding behind his dark glasses. Still, Kroenen kept his gas mask on at all times, never an inch of flesh showing on his person. But that was a different matter. Never hiding. Perfect.
When the motorcade stopped and the troops dismounted their trucks, the doors were opened for the officers to exit their car. The troops saluted, HYDRA and SS alike, and Von Krupt turned and looked up at his masked companion. "I suppose you would prefer to continue with your uh-" he began to say, but Kroenen disregarded his speech and moved passed Von Krupt, heading toward one of the open doors into the facility, signaling for two of the SS troops to follow him. It was not a complex layout, but would undoubtedly confuse any who attacked. While not confusing, it was not necessarily intuitive. Still, Kroenen's long overcoat moved behind him as he took his long strides down into the intestines of the place. All seemed in order along the passageways, at least. He entered the laboratory and stood with his arms clasped behind his back, looking around and noting that it was indeed...quite pristine, at first glance. The HYDRA scientists who stopped to stare at him were irksome, but it was not something he was unaccustomed to. And then his eyes fell upon a dark haired woman. Surely this was his long time contact. She met his assumptions in terms of her appearance, though he was immediately impressed with the confidence she seemed to carry herself with. In such a profession as theirs, a woman being the head scientist of anything was a surprise. Kroenen approached Ophelia and saluted her. "Good afternoon." he rasped through his mask as he looked down at the woman.

Viper was still at work when she heard someone come into the labs. She didn't immediately drop everything and turn to salute, and it wasn't out of disrespect. The chemicals in her hands were quite dangerous, and she didn't want to risk spilling a single drop. She kept her hands remarkably steady and mixed the two chemicals very carefully, finally setting them down when she was sure she was getting the reaction she wanted. From the sounds behind her, her contact was here and likely intimidating her scientists. Good. It was good for them. Sometimes it was healthy for them to feel a little bit of fear on occasion, and she knew she couldn't supply quite enough to keep them on their toes.
She turned and there he was. All 6'3" of him. Her eyes were level with his chest, and so she slowly raised her line of sight to look up into the hollow eyes of his mask. She thought she knew what to expect, but she was wrong. She was so wrong. From her correspondence with him, she hadn't expected ... this. He was a frightening sight to behold, and she considered herself to be fairly jaded in terms of the people she worked with. After all, she worked directly with the Red Skull, and that should make working with anyone else less terrifying. Still, there was something disturbing about Kroenen that unsettled her. But Viper steeled herself and looked into the glass eyes, saluting him with her HYDRA salute instinctively before catching herself and raising her right hand to salute him properly. Most SS officers like him were ... twitchy about HYDRA having their own salute, and she didn't want to give them a reason to disband them for being a separate entity.
"Good afternoon, Herr Doktor," she said, clasping her hands behind her back. "I trust you've found your visit here satisfactory." She stepped to the side to show him what she was working on. She had told him in her last letter, and she was sure he was curious to know how the experiment was going. Of course, she wouldn't know until she had a test subject reallocated. "I'm sure Der Fuhrer will be pleased to know that the Super Soldier serum I'm working on has been showing some improvements. I still have not had any results close to Dr. Erskine's formula, but I believe I may be on the right track."
One of her scientists, shaking from fear at the sight of Kroenen, dropped a test tube, and Viper's head snapped to the side to look at him. Her eyes were daggers as she stared him down, and he started shaking even more. Kroenen was an unknown, but he knew Viper's temper. He knew that today had to be perfect, and he had shattered part of her research. He dropped down to his knees to try to save what he could, but it was too late. Viper jerked her head toward him, and two armed guards stepped in and hit the scientist at the base of the neck with the butt of their gun. They glanced back at her, but her unchanging expression told them it wasn't enough. They dragged him out of the lab, and the sound of gunshots were heard, to which Viper finally showed a more pleasant expression.
"My apologies, Herr Doktor. Your arrival has made my men nervous."

Kroenen slowly but deliberately saluted Viper back, his fingers clasped together and his palm open, before he settled back into his eerie statuesque calm with his hands clasped behind his back. He noted that the woman's first instinct was to salute him in the manner of HYDRA rather than the member of their party. But he did not find his master's methods or ideologies very practical, least of all a wise means to spend one's career, political or otherwise. If nothing else, his camps would provide Kroenen with a neverending supply of test subjects. And that would suffice for now. And Viper was making progress of her own, which pleased him. "Very good. Yes." he rasped.
His attention was diverted immediately when the HYDRA scientist shook the vial loose and it shattered onto the floor. Kroenen turned slowly to the man and watched silently, save for the breathing of his gas mask, as the scientist was bludgeoned and then ultimately dragged from the room. The masked man turned his head to peer back down at Viper when the gunshot sounded. He paid it no particular mind. Another corpse for the pile or for reconstruction. "I have come with another purpose," he continued in his garbled voice, "It has been part of my continuing mission to retrieve fresh corpses from the camps and laboratories while I have been on inspection route. Not for the Fuhrer. But for myself." He turned and looked at his guards he had come in with. They nodded immediately and issued the other scientists from the room, closing the doors behind them.
Removing his cap slowly, revealing the polished dome of his mask, Kroenen began to walk through the room examining the equipment as he went. "It is a project you might perhaps be interested in," he went on, "Not this...super soldier formula. That is the Red Skull's pet project." He looked back at her. "For his pet doctor." His glassy lenses went back to perusing the equipment and chambers. "It is my intention to create a perfect soldier as well," he growled, "But not with this chemical formula that you have been so driven to chase. Science, yes. And black magic. You require data no doubt." Kroenen had been unbuttoning his tunic as he spoke, then the black shirt underneath that. The usually muffled ticking he produced became louder. His flesh underneath was a twisted road map of scars and pale, wrinkled flesh. On the left side near his heart was a cavity and within it a dial like a key. Giving it two deliberate turns, he wound himself like a watch and withdrew the long key with its many prongs. "Like me," he hissed as he reinserted the key, "A perfect soldier need not be the result of a serum. But a careful melding of other sources. I trust none other with this vision. Not our Fuhrer. He has been driven to madness. Not my science division. They are of narrow mind. Not the Thule Society. Fanatics, little more. You are the only one I find capable of appreciating this. An army of six hundred and sixty-six perfect soldiers."

Kroenen spoke of coming here with another purpose, and Viper found herself intrigued. She stood more at attention, but was wary when his guards issued her scientists from the room. She was alone, and her own guards were gone. She was left unprotected, and she wasn't sure if this was a trap or not. But he spoke of a project, and her interest was piqued. One that wasn't a wild goose chase for a serum that was lost forever. A project that might be a good test of her abilities as a scientist.
She watched him as he unbuttoned his tunic, not sure what he was doing, but it all became clear when she saw the flesh underneath. She had heard of Kroenen's addiction to surgery, but this was more proof than she ever expected to see. The scars themselves. More than that, he showed her ... a dial? Two turns, and he pulled it out, showing her a key. She couldn't help herself, and let her hand hover over it in fascination. She was overwhelmed with a desire to see his vision fulfilled. Six hundred and sixty-six perfect soldiers. Not based on a serum, but based on mechanics and clockwork. Much more reliable.
"Alas, I cannot," she at last said. "As much as I would love to help you, I cannot go against my orders. The Red Skull is obsessed with his serum, and if I do not make an effort to find the correct formula, I don't know what he will do with my outpost." She looked at him, clearly upset that she was confined to her own work. If she ran HYDRA, she would have jumped at this opportunity. But the Red Skull was an obsessive man, and he wanted his system.
"Let me assure you, it's not that I'm not interested. I am. But I must continue my research into the super soldier serum." She bowed her head in respect and looked at him again. "Please accept my apologies. You may take any of the dead we have, if it serves as any consolation."

Standing up straighter and clicking his boots together, Kroenen nodded curtly. He was irritated at this woman's lack of vision. But orders were orders, and she had hers. He could not fault her for that. Still, it was a shame. She would have been perhaps a valuable help. Regardless, that was a final word on the matter. Kroenen was not one to request anything twice, nor offer it. Time was eternally too short for that. "Very well," he growled, "There is no call for an apology. You have your-"
His reply was cut off as a massive explosion, like that of a bomb dropped overhead, blew half the wall of the laboratory away. Quick as a flash, Kroenen leapt over one of the consoles and dove onto Viper to move her out of the way. Once the debris cleared, disregarding the shrapnel that had embedded itself slightly through his back, he stood quickly and drew his pistol, looking around. Who would dare... ...and then his thought was answered with the vision before him. Countless Allied troops stormed the breach in the base, leaping over the shattered walls outside and exchanging fire with both SS and HYDRA soldiers. Kroenen stood, removing his overcoat and tossing his cap aside, firing his pistol to direct kill shots. Quick and efficient. He was never anything less. There was no pain. There was no fear. There was only the endgame.
The doors to the laboratory were bashed open with a log used as a ram, but the four soldiers were quickly dispatched again by Kroenen before he swiftly reloaded his pistol, looking down at Viper. "They have come at last."

Six hundred and sixty-six perfect soldiers. Surely she could try to convince the Red Skull of their use. However, if the suggestion came from a Nazi and not HYDRA, he would be reluctant. She knew that about him. It was one of the few things to truly admire about him, his allegiance to HYDRA. She wondered if there was a way to get him to see the benefit of Kroenen's proposition.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a massive explosion, and she instinctively got to work sealing her research away. She had practiced this so often, she was done before Kroenen caught her by surprise, pulling her out of harm's way. She was dazed from the act, checking to make sure all of her work was secured before turning her attention to the Allied troops barging into the laboratory. Her face contorted into a sneer as she whipped her lab coat off and unholstered the dual pistols at her hips So they had come. "I was wondering when they'd show up," she hissed, eyes trained on the door.
"Müller! Schneider! Escort the surviving scientists to the hangar. Richter! Braun! FIND MY DAUGHTER AND GET HER TO THE PANIC ROOM." Her orders were barked with such ferocity that those receiving them might have thought she would shoot them if they disobeyed. They saluted and set about their tasks, leaving
Two Allied soldiers came barreling through the door, and Viper took them out with one bullet each, fired simultaneously. She walked, almost eerily calm, through the door and into the fray. Three more soldiers were coming at her, but only two of them got very far. After she took one out with a killshot, she swung her leg in a roundhouse kick into a second's head, knocking him into the third. She used the butt of her gun to harden the punch to the second's head again, catching his neck with her leg as he fell to the ground. With a twist, his neck snapped, and she turned her attention to the third, scared man. He attempted to charge her, but she kicked him in the gut and headbutted him hard enough that he left some blood on her face. Starting to walk past him again, she put a single bullet in his skull and walked on, not waiting for Kroenen. She could take care of herself.

Kroenen watched the woman's skill, genuinely impressed with her prowess in battle. He had not anticipated this level of determination from a mere scientist. Then again, perhaps both of them were not entirely what they seemed on first glance. As Viper moved through the doorway, Kroenen determined he would be better used heading them off from the other direction, and so he proceeded through the breech in the laboratory out to the yard.
Upon stepping out, many of the soldier's eyes turned on him. Not in recognition, he fancied, but simply that another officer had appeared. "Take the freak out!" one of the commanding Allied officers shouted. An English dialect. From the country. Kroenen made note of this. Bullets battered through his tunic and in and out through his torso, causing dust to trickle out of the wounds...but he hardly budged from the barrage. Soon enough, even with all the chaos about, the shots stopped on him as the men reloaded. Kroenen held out a hand and caught some of the dust escaping his body, holding it up to his eyes before tossing it into the wind. He fired his last rounds from his pistol into the commanding officer's neck, both jugulars. As the man gagged and became a fountain of blood, Kroenen cast his sidearm to the ground and thrust his hands out on either side of him.
Two thick blades shot out of his cuffs along the top side of his forearms and hands. He took some small amount of pleasure in the fear he saw in these mens' eyes now. They knew who he was at last. Their enemy's assassin. Karl Ruprecht Kroenen. He crossed the blades before him as the men attacked with further shot, deflecting them with deft motions before diving at them, cutting through each as if they were hardly there. His task complete, he moved toward a squadron of the pinned down SS men and assisted them by deflecting more shot before diving into the fray like a top, slicing through flesh and bone as he moved toward where the corridor Viper had taken would let out.

Viper glanced back just in time to see Kroenen take a different route. Smart move. She herself slipped through one of the more secret passages and peeked out through some of the grates in the wall to see the Allied soldiers storming through. They were getting lost. She reached into one of her pockets and pulled out a smoke bomb, lighting it and tossing it through the slats in the grate. It exploded, raining down mustard gas onto her enemies. She had spent years in the past building her body's resistance to the mixture, and so she stood and watched them squirm, a smirk tugging at her lips.
She kicked open the grate and stepped over the bodies of the men slowly dying in her hallway, walking through the cloud of gas. More soldiers started to run toward her, but stopped when they saw her. She emptied her pistols into the soldiers, one shot each, and smirked as she reholstered them, unclipping her whips from her belt. There was shouting as they began to realize who it was they were up against. Ophelia Sarkissian. The fearsome Viper. Up until now, they had thought she had died as a mercenary. And now, they wouldn't live to tell otherwise.
With a crack of her whip, she knocked the guns out of their hands and used her other whip to snap around one of their necks. She tugged him toward her and stomped her foot on the ground, a dagger shooting out from her toes just in time for her to whirl her foot around and catch him in the side of the head. She yanked the dagger free and loosed her whip from his neck, turning to the rest of the soldiers. They faltered and started to run away, leaving their guns on the ground. Viper picked up a rifle and clipped it onto her belt, chasing after them and chasing them into the yard.
She could see Kroenen near another entrance and admired his fighting abilities for a brief moment before turning her attentions to some of the men taking aim at her. She grinned darkly at them, fangs glinting in the dim light, and cracked her whips, knocking rifles out of their hands and lunging at them. She snapped her whip around a neck and yanked, a sickening crack causing the other men to take a step back. She cracked her whip again, sending the fresh body tumbling into his friends. Her other whip cracked and lashed some of the men back, away from her, hard enough to cut through their uniforms to the flesh underneath. Anyone that got too close felt the dagger in her boot.

Fighting through the hail of gunfire like the devil, Kroenen continued to press what was left of the SS forces forward. As they moved, Kroenen could see Viper's abilities in his peripheral vision. She had made it out and was simultaneously proving to be formidable. This was good. He even admired it. How such a mortal could be so well coordinated. Rarely a set of traits seen on the battlefield in his experience. Though considering that most of the soldiers he had fought alongside were cannon fodder, this ultimately complimented her little.
Kroenen heard cries of warning ringing in his ears before he turned to see the Allies throwing their grenades into his troops' lines. He shouted a signal and they scattered. One. Two. Three sets of explosions sent them flying. Kroenen ducked the debris and managed to run at the offending enemy soldiers, before one tossed another grenade toward the car he had come in. It had been riddled with holes already, but otherwise had been left untouched, thought no doubt to be merely a showy vehicle of little importance. The back wheels had been damaged, and so the back end was lodged in the mud. Yet it was all still intact.
But when the grenade landed underneath the undercarriage of the car, Kroenen immediately focused on it...he had brought some of his own researches with him. His books, his.... ....his books. His ancient texts. His findings. No. He sheathed his blades back into his cuffs and dove at the car and reached for the grenade with his left hand, but his limbs were not long enough. No... Kroenen scurried under the car and gripped the grenade, pulling at its lodging, simultaneously counting the time down... ....until it blew. It sent the spindly man and the car as well reeling back. Kroenen saw little and could hear not a sound from being so close to the explosion. His nerve endings had already been replaced, and so he did not even feel his body slam into the wall behind him, nor feel the now empty cuff where his left hand had once been. He did not even feel when the pieces of debris pinned him to the wall like a beetle in a collection. Kroenen merely watched on in momentary resignation. So much of his work...gone in flames. So much knowledge destroyed.

Viper only needed to look up to see Kroenen scuttling toward the car. Her keen eye saw a grenade underneath that he was trying to reach for. She was just distracted enough that she was hit in the shoulder by gunfire, but she refused to go down. Instead, she whirled around and snapped her whip at the soldier that shot her, curling it around his neck and yanking him down to cover a grenade. But it wasn't the only explosion. Shortly after, the car exploded, and sent Kroenen flying back into a wall. Immediately, she ran toward him, using her pistols to quickly pick off any Allied soldiers in her way.
She examined him closely, though panic was starting to set in. She couldn't lose Kroenen as a correspondent. He was too valuable. More than that, she had started to see him as a friend. Whether they were truly friends or not, she had to do her best to get him out of danger. She hooked her arms around his shoulders and started to pull him off of the debris that impaled him. She was having some difficulty, possibly due to whatever clockwork that was added to his body? Hard to tell. Not that it mattered. No, what mattered was getting him free.
Then she heard planes. There were a series of explosions, all coming right for them. They were dropping bombs on a science lab. Instinctively, she yanked Kroenen free and pushed him down, shielding him with her own body. It didn't occur to her that if he could survive the explosion when the attack started, he might be able to survive this. All that was in her mind was protecting him.
The explosion was hot. Bright and hot. She could feel the skin on her face boiling from the heat, and it was all she could do not to scream out in pain. She flinched away from it, but she remained where she was, covering Kroenen with herself. Germany couldn't afford to lose him.

Viper had come for him. This was a curious turn of events. One Kroenen had hardly anticipated. She did not owe him anything, even as a superior officer. Still, her wrenching him free with minimal damage to his clockwork insides was impressive. And not at all unhelpful. And then the planes came...loud and searing overhead as they dropped their bombs. And Viper shielded him. No, this was impractical. An imperfect turn of events. Then he witnessed her burning from the explosion. This would not do if further damage was taken. He required her for what he had in mind, HYDRA or no HYDRA. Quickly, Kroenen threw off his overcoat in one long sweeping motion, wrapping it around her for additional protection from the flames, pressing one of the lapels onto her face to put out the searing damage. Like lightning he scooped the woman into his arms and ran out the back gate, away from the carnage and the chaos. He braced himself against the undamaged back wall of the facility. His eyes through the goggles of his gas mask looked all around.
The planes were not returning for a second pass. This was good. Yet the trouble remained...Viper had issued orders regarding a panic room and a daughter. Kroenen had suffered damage, including the loss of his left hand, but there was nevertheless work to still be done. He turned to see the back exit of the facility around the corner and ran to it, setting Viper over his shoulder as he turned the creaking lever and opened the door. Once inside, he closed and shut it again. The halls were quiet. The sound of the battle was outside. They had not been able to enter this part of the facility yet. Kroenen set Viper down gingerly and drew his overcoat from her, surveying the scarring damage. "The flames have cauterized the damage," he assessed as he felt her heartbeat with two of his fingers, "You are calmer than would be expected. This is good." He stood and looked down the long corridor. "Your daughter, yes?" he asked, "Where is this panic room? We must remove the others as best we can. This is a hopeless battle for the present."

Before she knew what was happening, Viper felt a mass cover her. It felt like leather. Suddenly, it didn't feel like she was burning anymore. She was still in great pain, but it wasn't nearly as intense as it was. Then, she was being scooped up into Kroenen's arms, and he was carrying her off out of the battle zone. She struggled, partly because she knew there was still fighting to be done, but partly because she knew her way around the base better than he did. But she also knew she was weak from the blast, so the best she could manage if left to her own devices would be a brisk limp.
But then he did put her down and she staggered a moment. He drew his overcoat from her and began examining her. She wondered, briefly, how she looked. Her face was ruined. It had to be. The blast had taken half of her face. She dared to reach up and touch the damage, and sure enough, it was extensive. She must have looked horrifying. She barely processed what Kroenen was saying, but she did hear him. He wanted to know where the panic room was. No. She couldn't let her daughter see her like this. But then there were more explosions. It was too late for them now. They were losing. They would never find the panic room. She and Kroenen would survive with the remaining scientists if they could make it to the shelter.
"This way." She limped the first few steps, but she found her stride as she ran through the halls. The halls twisted and turned in a confusing direction. It looked like they were going in circles, but soon enough, they came to an empty looking wall. She pressed on a brick, and the wall opened up. She winced at the effort it took. The blast had injured more than her face, after all, but her uniform had shielded her from most of the damage. She stepped inside and waited for Kroenen to join her in the room before she close the wall behind them. She looked around for her daughter, and sighed in relief when she saw her. Jessica was safe. But this meant Jessica would see her face. She quickly used her hair to hide the wounds and ran over to hug her daughter. "Thank god you're alright."

She had been studying in her room when the first explosion sounded. Being a civilian on a military base was not an entirely unusual thing, but Jessica was at that age where she was old enough o not get into trouble, but also young enough where she wasn’t much use to HYDRA, not that her mother would allow her to do anything for this war in order to help. She had turned a blind eye to Seraph teaching her little bits of self defense and tactics, but now that they were in Germany, she was told to stay safe and away from the trouble of war. Which was why Jessica stayed in her and her mother’s quarters for most of the day.
When the explosion hit, Jessica sat up and strained to listen for something, anything that would say it had just been an accident, not an actual invading force. Her heart pounded at that thought. She didn’t know what she would do. What if her mother was hurt by the blast? What if they captured her, or worse, killed her? What would they do with her? These thoughts forced Jessica in to action, causing her to run for the door. Thankfully, she wasn’t able to do much other than get a few feet outside of her quarters before two HYDRA agents, Richter and Braun, arrived and began escorting her to the panic room. She protested, or at least she tried to. She wanted to be there and help her mother, but if they were sent to protect her, at least that meant Jessica’s mother had been alive to give such an order.
Once inside, all Jessica could do was wait. Wait and hope and pray. Neither Richter nor Braun spoke. Their duties were clear; keep Jessica safe at all costs. She tried to ask them about the status of her mother, but they simply said their commanding officer was fine, nothing more. Eventually, they just began to ignore her questions, so Jessica finally just gave up and sat down quietly to wait. If her mother was alive and safe, she would come for her. She always had in the past.
It seemed like an eternity before the wall to the panic room opened up and two figures stepped inside; a man and a woman. It took Jessica a moment for her eyes to adjust to the change in lighting, causing her to blink rapidly, but the hug was a wondrously welcomed sensation. “Are you all right, mama?” Her hair smelled burnt and bloody and that alone sent Jessica panicking, causing her to react as she always had when her mother had returned from a mission. The need to check her for injuries was overwhelming. She likely would have discovered the mess that was the side of Viper’s face if her eyes hadn’t glanced over at the individual who had followed Viper in. It was Kroenen. This was the closest she had ever been to the man and his presence was a bit disconcerting. “Mama…?” she asked softly, afraid that if she said anything more, it would draw further attention to herself.

Viper glanced back to Kroenen and gestured for him to come closer. She likely wouldn't have if she had noticed he made her daughter so uncomfortable. "Jessica, there is someone I'd like for you to meet." She looked toward Kroenen for as long as she could, to disguise her facial wound. Her hair wouldn't do it forever, and sooner or later, she would have to explain to her daughter what happened to blow half of her face away. She would have to explain she tried to cover a man that, in retrospect, may have survived. And that she would do it again if she had to.
"This is Doctor Karl Ruprecht Kroenen. He is with the SS and Thule Society, and he is here to inspect our operations. Well ... WAS here to inspect our operations." She looked at the wall and snarled. "I will say, Herr Doktor, you were quite something to watch on the field of battle. It was quite an honor to fight by your side, even if it may seem we have lost the day."
She turned her attentions back to her daughter and tried to smile, but she knew it was only a matter of time before she noticed the burn. "I'm fine, Jessica. I'm a little worse for wear, but I'm fine. I wasn't going to let the Allies get me that easily." She hugged Jessica protectively and held her there for a good long while, as she usually did when she had gotten hurt more than she liked to let on.
