What's hidden behind the mask:
Personality: Mystique has the ability to win the hearts of men and women with the wink of an eye, and the will to destroy them just as quickly. Her many years of living has jaded her to much that humanity has to offer, and her status as a mutant has done its fair share to give her a bleak outlook on life. However sweet she may be on the surface, it hides a brutal nature that few could imagine from a woman. She happily plays the part of the vixen, and takes some sick satisfaction when she sees men crumble under her feminine wiles.
She considers herself a loner, but becomes fiercely loyal to those that win her trust. That in itself, however, is a difficult task to achieve. Her experiences of discrimination have hardened her heart, making her very hard to win over. She will, however also show loyalty to those that pay her enough. When she is under contract or under onus to someone, she will fight and kill to see that the contract is fulfilled. She will never leave a job half done, making her precise to the point of obsession.
Though she would steadfastly deny the fact, she does hold a lot of love in her heart for children of her same condition. Mutant children that get abandoned by their parents, especially. More generally speaking, she feels a certain amount of kinship with those that are outcasts. Even (to a lesser degree) humans that are cast out by their peers. Some could say it's a weakness, but she likes to turn it into a strength. As Alexander Hamilton is often misquoted as saying, "If you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything." She takes these words to heart, and believes you must have a cause to fight for, be it children, family, or mutant rights.
History: Much of Mystique's past is, appropriately enough, surrounded by mystery. She works as a spy and works hard to keep details about herself hidden. Her exact birthday is unknown, and because of her abilities, she is able to appear to be of any age. However, she most recently hails from Germany. As a child, she discovered her abilities to shapeshift when she grew scared. It didn't take long for her to be able to control her powers, and quickly began using them to her advantage. She, more than once, got into trouble with the law for misdemeanors related to shoplifting and petty arson, but being that she could change her shape at will, she was rarely apprehended. It was all fun and games to her.
Unfortunately, her abilities also made her a target of hate crimes. Mutants were less understood then as they are now, and she quickly began to fear her powers. She hid them and chose a singular face to use and tried desperately to maintain a normal life. She found work where she could, but didn't have to work long. She married a wealthy baron named Christian Wagner. Her past caught up with her in the form of a child. Her son, Kurt, was born looking much like she did in her true form. Blue with yellow eyes. Fearing that her husband would reject the child, she fled, leaving no trace behind.
She did her best as a single mother, trying to raise her son the only way she could. She whispered tales in German, silently vowing to give him a better childhood than she had been given. But it was not to last. Word got to her that the ruler of neighboring country Latveria took control of Germany. Knowing she couldn't smuggle her child across any border with the way he looked, and fearing for her own life, she left the Kurt with a church and fled the country.
Today, she lives in America. Whatever she might have feared from Victor Von Doom's reign, she was not prepared for American xenophobia. Whatever she might have hoped in finding her own kind in another country, she has thus-far been disappointed. Either there were no other mutants, or they all lived in the same fear that drove her into hiding. She wants to see mutants united for survival, but at every turn, she is shown the same discrimination she knew as a child.
Driven to a fury she had not known before, she quickly adopted a more ruthless, extremist stance. Humans must be held responsible for the hatred they show her kind.
Other: Today, she works as a spy and terrorist in hopes of forming a Brotherhood of like-minded mutants. She moonlights as a freelancer and mercenary, still unaware that her ex-husband has died and left her his fortune.
