Powers: Rance Raleigh has no superhuman powers, but as a bloodline descendant of the Homo Magi has the capability to learn and wield magic and magical artifacts. Because Rance is descended from the Duc de Chantreigh, he is able to activate the powers embued within in by that 17th Century magician that transforms him into the Cavalier.
Abilities: (as Rance) Multi-Lingual, History, Business Management; (as the Cavalier) Hand to Hand Combat, Acrobatics, Swordsmanship, Horsemanship, Occult Lore.
Rance is also independently wealthy as the heir to a moderate family fortune and successful auction house curator.
Weapons and Equipment:
- Portrait of the Duc de Chantreigh, Rance's ancestor, which is kept in his curio shop. This magical portrait frowns, alerting Rance to impending dangers. Under certain conditions, this magical portrait will even speak telepathically to Rance, and allow him to commune with the spirit of his ancestor.
- The Sword of the Duc de Chantreigh - this antique dueling rapier is enchanted, and forged from the psycho-sensitive Hell-Realm ore known as Netheranium, which makes it very effective against ghosts and demons. In addition to mystically transforming Rance into the physical likeness of his ancestor and guiding him to confronting evil and magical threats, it also grants Rance a danger sense, the ability to detect life (see souls / spirits, and determine their moral alignment) thus darkness and invisibility are ineffective cover for his opponents. The sword is capable of transforming itself and Rance's physical form into a true astral form and back, allowing him to combat metaphysical threats, or "appear from thin air." In astral form, Rance can phase through normal walls and doors but otherwise can not interact with the physical world. Telepaths or mindreaders will discover two voices in the Cavalier's mind, Rance's and that of his ancestor)
- Spirit (horse) - this otherwise normal horse resides on the Astral Plane, but can be summoned to the material world when the Cavalier whistles.
What's hidden behind the mask:
Personality: Rance is a man of exquisite tastes and manners, charmed by the ways of the Old World, and quite eccentric when it comes to appraising and collecting art and decor from centuries past. Though a successful business man and raised in an upper class background, Rance is not arrogant or condescending to those of lesser and meager means. In fact, he often points out that many of the antique treasures he collects and sells in his shop were fashioned by the lower class and hardworking artisans and craftsmen of their time. As the Cavalier, he gets to act out his Renaissance sensibilities as a noble and daring and dashing swashbuckler and champion of the good, out to right wrongs and protect the innocent. Because the transformation into the Cavalier merges the spirit of the Duc of Chantreigh with Rance's psyche, he will at times speak in Elizabethan English, though with Rance's New York accent, which lends itself to people thinking that Rance is being over-the-top theatrical or faking his speech patterns. In combat, the Cavalier taunts and derides his opponents with wit and sarcasm, with this odd hodgepodge of New York and 17th Century English idioms amd accents. Some could be led to believe the Cavalier is insane.
History: Rance's life changed when he acquired the portrait and sword of his ancestor Duc de Chantreigh, a 17th Century occultist who traveled Europe battling ghosts, demons, and their possessed and evil servants of the mortal world. One of his first adventures led him to bring down Nazi saboteurs at an American bomb factory. He has only recently begun to understand the magical aspects of his heritage and destiny to battle supernatural threats. For now, he uses the advantages of the mystical powers granted by his sword to take down street thugs and organized crime, a dashing swashbuckler saving damsels in distress. After the violent murder of his employee and sidekick Rocky, Rance has taken a more cautious approach to confronting organized criminals, often spying on them from the astral plane before materializing to attack them. This of course has instilled fear and added to the urban legends surrounding his appearances. Rance is not trained in the occult, but rather is guided by the spirit of his ancestor, which is trying to prepare him to realize his full potential as a magic wielder. Rance has not fully embraced this, as the transformation into the Cavalier significantly alters his physical appearance (into that of his ancestor) and he fears he may permanently become a reincarnation of the Duc and lose himself completely to the transformation.
Other: Please note that this version of the Cavalier leans somewhat on a revamp of Nedor Comics characters done for a Call of Cthulu / HP Lovecraft Mythos RPG supplement.
